The Sea-Surgeon's Environment
The environment in which the sea surgeon functioned was primarily the ship. This presented him with a variety of different jobs and situations that a land-based surgeon
never dealt with. Because most of his work was ship-board, the food and drink (and other things taken into the body such as tobacco) was restricted to whatever had been brought on board when the ship was at land which presented unique problems.
